Dr. Souraya Noujaim
Dr. Souraya Noujaim is the Director of the Islamic Arts Department at Musée du Louvre in Paris, where she oversees the curatorial strategy and the development of its collection and narrative, ensuring it caters to the wider community and contributing to building a relevant and sustainable institution. She sits on the advisory board of the Louvre Lens Museum.
Prior to this role, Dr. Souraya was the first appointed Scientific, Curatorial and Collections Management Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi. In her capacity, she oversaw and led the curatorial strategy of Louvre Abu Dhabi, the new developments of its narrative, the development of the museum’s collection as well as the exhibition programming. In addition, she has been instrumentally involved in the launching of the prestigious Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Here - Richard Mille Art Prize.
She has also been a key figure in driving the scientific aspects of international partnership programs and has defined its research program along with supervising the creation of the museum’s scientific analysis laboratory. She led the implementation of comprehensive training policies and procedures for museum professionals.
Noujaim began her career at Musée du Louvre, as part of the “Grand Louvre” project she took part in the opening of the first Islamic Art Department rooms of Musée du Louvre. She has since worked for major cultural institutions such as the Arab World Institute (IMA), the British Museum and France Muséums Agency (AFM), developing and implementing international multidisciplinary scientific programs on Islamic Art, from research to museum exhibitions. Throughout her career, Souraya has been committed to engaging diverse audiences in exceptional and meaningful art and display. She oversaw and curated a number of landmark exhibitions and was a senior lecturer at Ecole du Louvre, Chair of Islamic Arts. Dr. Souraya Noujaim holds a Ph.D. from University Paris - Nanterre, in Islamic Art History and Archaeology, postgraduate research diplomas from École du Louvre in epigraphy and a degree in Museum studies. She also studied Arabic Islamic civilisation at the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO).
